Digital technologies and the conservation of cranes

AC-CS #30373

Researchers and political ecologists Myung-Ae Choi and Buhm Soon Park, from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), explore the entangled lives of humans, crane species, and AI technologies in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. A site of geopolitical tension created by military conflict and industrial farming, the DMZ is one of the most important wintering places for the endangered crane. Using first-hand accounts and visual materials, this case study considers the perspectives of the ecologists, engineers, ethnographers, social scientists, and locals who gather in this accidental conservation zone.
