Whose?
A Poem
Them/us
Ours.
Your hero, my villain
Your gain, my expense
Your piece, my injustice.
The World Series
But you competed alone
A landslide
But all your opponents were in jail
My comrade
But only because I am a yes-person.
This is a free country
Says who?
The police are just doing their job
Says the black man?
Everybody has rights!
Then why Black Lives Matter in 2016?
Trees are flora
But they are my shrine?
Elephants are fauna
But they are my totem?
Let’s teach them biodiversity conservation
But you found all these animals thriving?
If you were such good stewards of nature
How come all your plans and mountains are empty?
Now you talk piously about gas emissions
How come you did not sign the Kyoto Protocol?
You condemn Africans who refuse to obey the International Criminal Court
Yet you are not even a signatory!
We must take our country back
Make America Great Again!
Back to blacks in chains, slaving on the plantation.
Back to women in the kitchen baking cookies.
To a bigoted, white male chauvinistic past.
Our history
Yes, which erased mine
The genocide
Correction, you forgot Armenians and the Herero
Human rights in the world
Indeed, starting right here at home.
Your light, my darkness
My darkness, your light
Your civilization, my barbarism
My barbarism, your savagery.
You tell me: Independence!
I say no: In dependence.
You say: We liberated you!
I say no: We liberated ourselves from you!
You say: He’s chasing the American dream!
I say no: He is chasing his dream in America.
Oh, they are so poor
They live on a dollar a day!
I say no: They have creative resilience
Which American or Briton would live on that little?
All you do is pity them
I say learn from them Build upon them.
You dream of a global village
One worldview
I dream of a world diverse
Multi-optic
You speak in grand mono-cultural narratives
I speak of many possible stories
Multi-vocal.
The Technosphere?
A world governed by technological vertigo?
No, the world is a very big place.
Perhaps technospheres,
And even then, techno not as autonomous
Always technopolitical, sociotechnical, technocultural …
The Anthropocene?
No, THE is too powerful a word
Perhaps anthropocenes,
And even then, anthro not as autonomous
Always open to nonhuman agents
Perhaps mutual shaping
Co-constructed.
Where all you can give is one meaning
I see many
You tell me about THE
I say A
You ask me anything
My answer is the same
WHOSE?
