Mathias Denecke is a doctoral student at the Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL) at Leuphana University in Lüneburg. His PhD project focuses on the metaphors of the stream and flow, as well as their use within a psycho-philosophical context since the late nineteenth century. The project takes a closer look at the changing notions of these metaphors in relation to technological conditions, in terms of a general “cyberneticization.” Mathias’s main aim is to allow a reflection on the contemporary and observable persistence of the stream and flow metaphors as a symptom of the “technological unconscious.” Mathias completed his MA in literature, arts, and media studies at the University of Konstanz in 2014, with a dissertation on the conditions that allow for the potential formation of communities within the smartphone app Spotify. His research interests include media ecology, participation theory, and the relationship between the individual and the community. He is involved with the research initiative “Media Participation,” organized by Professor Dr. Beate Ochsner and Professor Dr. Isabell Otto. In addition, he is a member of the GfM (Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaften) work group “Sound Studies.”
